Can anyone explain the theory of relativity in very simple layman's terms?

No, I'm not asking you to do my homework for me ; ) My school days are long gone. I'm actually very interested in knowing what this theory is all about, but I haven't yet been able to find an explanation that my layman's mind can digest.
